New Year walk at Keyhaven Marshes (Keyhaven, Hampshire)
Location: Meet at the car park opposite the Gun Inn, Keyhaven, SZ 306,915.

Date and time: 10am-1pm Saturday 3 January 2009.

Our annual start the New Year with a walk around Keyhaven to look for wintering waders and wildfowl.

Kingfishers are fairly regular near the car park and, with luck, we may see one. We will walk along the coast and will look for waders and ducks on the way. The tide will be low so we may see lots of waders feeding on the mudflats. This should include Curlews, Black-tailed Godwits and Grey Plover. Red-breasted Merganser are frequent on the sea and sometimes Peregrine or even Merlin can be seen hunting over the salt marsh or sitting on posts looking out for their next catch.

We shall also have a look at the pools by the sea wall for ducks. These often have a great variety of ducks with Pintail, Shoveler and Gadwall usually being seen. Spotted Redshank sometimes winter here too. If we are lucky we may see Dartford Warblers that often winter in gorse scrub.

We shall be going to Gun Inn afterwards to celebrate the first Project Fred walk of 2009!!

There are toilets at the car park where we meet.
