Location: Meet outside the Chequers pub, Lower Pennington at SZ 322,936. To find the parking area, leave Lymington on the A337 towards Christchurch. At the roundabout with the petrol station as you get to Pennington, turn left and follow this road for about 1 mile. The Chequers pub is on the right and there is some parking for a few cars just after it. From here we shall car share to the morning and afternoon walk locations.
Date and time: 9am-5pm Sunday 7 September.
Fancy a challenge and the chance to raise money for charity? Each year we will run a charity bird race and the proceeds will go to a charity. This year we will be donating the proceeds to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. Today we shall see just how many species of bird we can record. And to make it more exciting we will split into two groups. The two groups will walk in opposite directions round a circular walk at Pennington in the morning and in opposite directions round a circular walk at Lymington in the afternoon.
Lunch will be at the Chequers pub between 12 Noon and 2pm when we shall compare notes and see which team is winning. At the end of the day we shall meet here again to compare notes again and see which team has won - and there will be small prizes too. Last years the winning team recorded over 70 species - how many will we see this year?
This is a great time to see a good variety of birds as some of the summer migrants are still here, but there are plenty of birds migrating and waders are often seen in good numbers too. A look at the sea can sometimes be rewarding with Terns and even Skuas to be seen and there can be migrating birds of prey such as Marsh Harrier or Osprey.
We ought to see Swallows, Warblers, Wheatear and maybe uncommon migrants such as Yellow Wagtail, Whinchat or Spotted Flycatcher. Waders that may be seen include Green Sandpiper and Curlew Sandpiper. There is always the chance of something more unusual such as Wryneck or Avocet. Of course if anything unusual is found everyone is welcome to go and see it, whichever group they are in!!
A great chance to have some competitive fun, see migrating birds and raise money for charity.
