We shall be staying at the Bird Observatory on the Bill, which means you will be in the heart of the migrant activity from the moment you wake up. Early morning is the best time of day to see migrants as they drop in, to find rarities and to do productive sea watches. Bird ringing takes place in the Observatory garden each day, so you may have the chance of close encounters with the birds.
In late September many common birds are passing through with high numbers of hirundines (Swallows and Martins), Wagtails, Pipits and Finches. Some Ring Ouzels, Firecrests and Black Redstarts are still going through and this can be the best time of year to see Merlins and Short-eared Owls. Sea-watching often produces Great and Arctic Skua and a few Sooty Shearwater. Over the past few years rarities that have been seen at Portland in the last week of September include Red-breasted Flycatcher, Rose-coloured Starling and Yellow-browed Warbler.
We shall meet at Portland Bird Observatory on the Friday evening and we shall be getting up at dawn each morning to see what migrants are around. After breakfast we shall respond to what birds get reported elsewhere. If nothing is reported we shall go to Ferrybridge, Radipole Lake, Lodmoor or other parts of the Bill to see what we can find.
How to book: Please book in advance by contacting Project Fred on 01425 673321 or by emailing project.fred@virgin.net.
Cost: £65 (£20 deposit required by 30th April to secure places).
Accommodation: The Bird Observatory offers basic, hostel-style, self-catering accommodation with shared facilities, so we shall be in shared rooms of 2 or 4, in bunk beds. We have spaces for 9 people. Please note that as places are limited you will be asked to share rooms (single sex or couples). We cannot provide single rooms. For more information on the Bird Observatory accommodation please visit their website at
www.portlandbirdobs.org.uk
Length of walks: These will vary, but none should be longer than 3 km. The terrain is on level ground for the most part, but one or two areas of the Bill are a little hilly. Paths can be a bit rocky and uneven so walking boots and care are the best options.
What to bring: Binoculars, if you have them. Warm and waterproof clothing. Your own bedding and towels. Please note that because the accommodation is self-catering you will need to bring your own food for breakfast. There is the opportunity to eat out at lunch and in the evenings. Full details will be given to you with your booking confirmation.
