The weather was warm and sunny. Highlights were Avocets, Mediterranean Gull and Common Terns.
We walked down the west side of Titchfield and went in the hides overlooking the pools. On the way to the first hide we had good views of a Sedge Warbler in song, heard Reed Warbler and Cetti’s Warbler singing and saw a few Linnets and 2 Mediterranean Gulls fly over. The pools were very busy with Black-headed Gulls, Shelduck, a few Moorhen, Coot, Oystercatcher, Lapwing and Common Tern all nesting and feeding their young and we got good views of them from the first hide. We also had great views of Avocets here. They breed here now, but none of the nests were easily visible. Two Jay flew by on the way to the second hide. The hide overlooks the same pool as the first one, but from a different angle. We saw much the same as from the first hide with the addition of 2 Black-tailed Godwit, a Tufted Duck and some Gadwall. From the third and final hide we saw over 100 Black-tailed Godwit, many of them in their chestnut summer plumage, and some Canada Geese with young. On the way back to the cafe a few more Mediterranean Gull flew over and we had pretty good views of a singing Whitethroat. Simon Curson
