The weather was sunny. Highlights were Nightingales and a Peregrine.
The object of this evenings walk was to hear, and hopefully see, Nightingales. We walked from the pub south through scrubby areas. At first we heard a Nightingale a little way off, but then we heard another sing briefly much closer, so we waited. After a short while it started singing again and Ashley, Mike and Grant spotted it behind a branch. It flew down before many of us could see it. However we waited and our patience paid off. After another five minutes or so it popped back onto the branch and Ashley got it in his telescope, so we all had partly great views of it singing partly obscured by a thick branch. We walked further and stopped at other singing Nightingles and at one point Dennis spotted a Peregrine sitting on a metal walkway part way up the Fawley power station tower. Again Ashley’s telescope enabled everyone to see it. We saw Whitethroats performing their song flight and we heard many Willow Warbler. Not many species, but seeing a Nightingale and hearing several others was just magical and we celebrated in a nearby club! Simon Curson
