As we enter the last month of the year there are a few good birds around. A Red-breasted Goose remains in the Pennington/Normandy area, but it does move around a lot. look for it amongst the flocks of Canada Geese, rather than the Brents. A Cattle Egret flew over Romsey and may turn up in the coastal marshes so keep your eyes open. Slavonian Grebes and Spotted Redshanks are still around Pennington too.
There are 2 Black-necked Grebe and several Brambling at Blashford Lakes. There has been a Long-tailed Duck here too and it may still be present. The Great White Egret is still here, but elusive!!
Further afield there are 3 Whooper Swans near Wareham (2 miles west of Wareham in fields west of Holmebridge) and the Hooded Merganser remains at radipole Lake, Weymouth.
11th December The Red-breasted Goose is still at Normandy Marsh. A Great Grey Shrike is around Ocknell Plain (near Stoney Cross) on the New Forest. There are a lot of Waxwings in UK at the moment, but very few in the south - lets hope!!
22nd December There are now 4 Black-necked Grebe at Ibsley Water, Blashford Lakes and the Great White Egret is still there, but elusive. 12 Waxwing were at Beaulieu Road Station area yesterday morning, so some have made it into Hampshire - keep your ears and eys open. A Yellow-browed Warbler is wintering in Fareham. There are 2 Great Grey Shrikes on the Forest - 1 around Pig Bush and the other near Burley, just north of the old railway line on the west side of the Burley to Thorney Hill road. The Red-breasted Goose is still at Normandy.
