Damselflies & Dragonflies
« on: August 02, 2008, 10:52:11 AM »

Hi,

We've been having a great time these past few days looking at damselflies and dragonflies. I've also spent a long time with a magnifying glass looking at photos (god bless the digital camera) and a field study guide. So far the highlights have been Southern Hawker, Keeled Skimmer, Emperor and Broad-bodied Chaser on the dragonfly front.

As for the damselflies we've had Large Reds, Southerns and lots of Beautiful Demoiselles.

The best sight so far was watching a female Golden-ringed Dragonfly depositing her eggs. It was fascinating, especially seeing how fast she was. I do have a great picture of the moment her ovipositar breaks the miniscus of the water.

Bye for now.
