Migrants - as they come in (continued discussion)
« on: April 05, 2008, 09:13:15 AM »

4th April.
Lots of Willow Warblers arrived today - up to 350 on Hengistbury and 20 around Keyhaven.
Osprey came across in good numbers today too and the first Redstarts were seen. A few Redstarts are already singing on territory in the New Forest woodlands.
Scarce birds are thin on the ground, but we did see a Water Pipit at Keyhaven this morning (on Fishtail Lagoon) and there have been 2 Egyptian Goose on Stanpit Marsh from yesterday evening.

Saw some Redstarts & Willow Warblers on the Forest this morning.  Blackcap also.

At lower Test no sign of the Osprey but there was a couple of Cetti's Warblers singing.

7th April.
The northerly winds have slower migration down to a trickle. A few commoner migrants are still coming in with 1 Redstart near Lymington (thanks Lyz and Derek). A lot of Willow Warblers came in on 5th and a few on 6th.
Once the north wind changes there could be lots of migrants around!!!

A couple of hours around Ashlett Creek scrub this morning produced 5 singing Nightingales, a single Whitethroat, 4 Blackcaps, 2 Bullfinches as well as loads of chiffchaffs and willow warblers,  Highlight was an Osprey flying over towards the Hamble area.

Whimbrels have been coming in for a few days now. Keep an eye out for them on the coast.
Migrants have been trickling in so far this spring.
Rarity news is of a Lesser Yellowlegs (a wader like a Redshank, but with yellow legs) is at Pagham harbour in Sussex.

Whitethroats are now singing in hedgerows in many places and Sedge and reed Warblers have started to arrive. A lot of migrants have arrived in the last few days with lots of House Martin and Swallow around.
