Coral Necklace on New Forest - 30 August
« on: August 30, 2006, 02:11:53 PM »

Mandy and I have just been for a walk on the New Forest and saw a rare plant - Coral Necklace. Simon Currie had found it and told us where it is.
Coral Necklace is a low growing sprawling plant that likes areas that are wet in winter, but dry out in summer (pond edges, wheel ruts etc). It has reddish stems and pairs of small green leaves and groups of tiny white flowers where the pairs of leaves join the stem. It is very rare nationally, only growing in Cornwall and the New Forest.
We saw ours on the western edge of Wilverley Inclosure just in from the A35 (on the east side of the A35). At SU 239,014 there is a gate from Wilverley Inclosure to the A35. Just in from this gate is a small open patch of ground with a few wheel ruts. The Coral Necklace is in these wheel ruts.
Keep an eye out and see if you can find it in any other spots in the New Forest. I would be very interested to hear of any that you find and will pass records on to the county plant recorder. Apparently it is increasing and grows by wet areas on Beaulieu Road Heath and at Pilley Bailey by the pond.
