Red Kites

Yesterday I was out and about, travelling in connection with my work.
Driving up the M3, just north of Winchester and a couple of miles before the services, I saw a large raptor lazily flying along the bank on the other side at about 30 feet above the ground. Unmistakably a Red Kite - the forked tail was a dead give away. Checked the mirror - nothing behind - foot off the gas to slow down to look as I passed. A couple of seconds later, a second Red Kite appeared over the bank on my side of the motorway. Excellent view as it flew over - all field markings visible. Georgeous bird - haven't seen one since Abergavenny in 1981. I know that they are around the Chilbolton area but have never been fortunate enough to see one.
What a bonus - made my day!

Well done Carole. It is worth keeping your eyes peeled on any journey (without decreasing your concentration on driving). Red Kites are gradually getting comoner in Hants and so will be seen more and more frequently. Simon Curson
