Hawkmoth

Yesterday (March 6th), as well as seeing my first, second and third Brimstone of the year, I also saw a large brown moth hovering and feeding on the daffs in the garden. It had orange and white patches at the rear of the abdomen. I did think Hummingbird - but having never seen one before I'm not sure. My Moth ID book says they are normally here from May onwards.
Does anyone have any idea what type of moth this could have been? Cheers,
Carole

Hi Carole, It certainly sounds like a Humming-bird Hawk Moth. In the last few years they have been shown to survive our winters in hibernation and come out early in the spring. Well done Carole - a good record. Simon Curson.
