Who's calling? Bird song identification (Singleton and West Dean, West Sussex)
Location: Singleton Village Hall, Singleton, West Sussex. The village hall is along the road going to Charlton. It is set back from the road a little just opposite the last house on the left as you leave Singleton heading for Charlton. SU 879,131.

Date and time: 10.00am-4.00pm Sunday 25 April. There is also a follow up bird song day on Sunday 16 May.

Would you like to learn how to identify birds from their songs and calls, how to tell who is singing and which species is calling? Would you like to be able to find species just by listening for their sounds? If so, then this short course is for you.

Learning bird songs and calls is an invaluable aid to bird watching as many birds can be located from their sounds. The majority of seasoned birders use their ears more than their eyes.

We go through theory and some practice by using CDs in the village hall in the morning. We will then have a short walk outside around the village and local area up to lunch time. Lunch will be in the village hall. After lunch we will drive to nearby West Dean Woods for a walk to practise our new found skills.

This course is run on behalf of the Sussex Wildlife Trust - see links.

How to book: Please book in advance by contacting Sussex Wildlife Trust on 01273 497561.

Cost: £30 (£22.50 to SxWT members).

Length of walks: Short, about 2km on slightly hilly ground. The path to West Dean Woods is uphill all the way and may be potholed and muddy in places.

What to bring: Binoculars if you have them and any books on bird identification. Please bring a packed lunch.
